My First 30/30 Hub Challenge - What I Have Learned

Well I have to admit that my own 30/30 hub challenge turned into a 30/44 challenge instead. Thirty hubs in 44 days instead of in 30. But I won’t be too hard on myself because I believe that it is better to finish late than never. Words have never come easy for me, which makes writing even more challenging. But I find that the more I write, the easier it gets.

I learned a lot over the course of the last 44 days, and the purpose of this hub is to share some of those things with you.

Most writers, and myself included, often do not feel as though they have enough content within themselves to write on a regular basis. But all it takes is a little bit of brain-picking to discover that you have collected way more content than what you could possibly ever write about.

I will also admit that I signed up to receive MomWithAHook’s crochet newsletter. As one of her thank you gifts, she sent me an e-book of 365 crochet topics to write about. A lot of her ideas were already in my mind, but she had several that I hadn’t thought about. So thank you Sara for the future inspirations.

I don’t fully understand all the factors that go into the hub score and the profile score. However, I did notice that when I published on a regular basis that my profile score goes up. Not that it matters in the search engines, but to me a 90 looks much better than an 85.

I also noticed that when you publish a new hub that you get more traffic from Hubpages, which is always a good thing. In addition, and perhaps this is in my imagination only as I haven’t quite experimented with it enough, but it seems that when you bookmark the hub in Twitter, Redgage, Facebook and others, as soon as it is published that it gets even more traffic.

Even though I doubled the amount of hubs, my traffic did not double. I guess it takes time for the hubs to be indexed in the search engines, and thus the results will follow in time. I did, however, see a positive increase in both traffic and earnings, which is enough to keep me going. At 50 hubs I still have a long way to go, but it is a good start.

Another benefit of this challenge is that it helped me to organize the information within myself in order to write more organized articles. This is an important skill for a writer because it helps the articles to flow smoother, which makes it easier for the readers.

During this challenge I wrote a few articles on learning how to crochet and how to read crochet patterns. Although this information is old news to me, going over it and actually writing it down has inspired me to write neater patterns that adhere to better standards. One of my main goals is to put a skill level beside each pattern in order to help others to see at a glance the difficulty of it.

This challenge has been fun, and I hope to do another one in the near future.
