Ponchos, A Hot New Fashion Trend

Ponchos, A Hot New Fashion Trend

Rumor has it that when Martha Stuart left prison several years ago that she wore a handmade poncho, called the Homecoming Poncho. When the public saw her wear it, the demand for ponchos increased.

Ponchos were popular in the 1970's but then somehow lost their popularity, until the turn of the century when they made a tremendous comeback for a few years. Designers designed patterns for all shapes and sizes including young children, babies and even pets. Some styles are similar to what was in during the 70's, but there are also many more new and sophisticated styles.

It seemed as though the whole world was in on the trend; the stars of Hollywood were spotted many times while wearing them.

I find that ponchos are the most comfortable thing, (next to my crocheted slippers) to wear around the house. However, depending on the style they can get in the way when cooking, cleaning or doing other tasks around the house. You certainly wouldn't want to wear a bulky poncho when doing dishes, vacuuming, (you'd get too hot) or srubbing the toilets.

But because they are so quick to take off and put back on they are hardly a nuisance. When the task is complete and I'm ready to start relaxing, crocheting, or chilling in front of the computer, the poncho goes back on.

In the winter months I like to wear them over my shirts or sweaters for extra warmth. I even wear them over my pajamas on days when I don't have to leave the house. On those cold winter nights they are perfect for curling up on the couch or in front of the fireplace (if you have one).

In the spring and fall Ponchos can be worn as light jackets when it's chilly out. In the summer months I love wearing the thin lacy ponchos over t-shirts or tank-tops. Many of the more stylish designs can be worn with dress pants, skirts, or over an evening dress.

So no matter what the occasion, or preferred style, there is a poncho out there for everyone.

I love the black poncho in the picture! I've never made one, but it doesn't look too difficult. Thanks for a new idea!
