Types of Crafts to Enjoy With Your Kids
Crafting with your kids is a great way to keep them occupied on days when they are not busy with school or other activities. It may be tempting to just stick them in front of the television set or in front of the X-box to keep them busy and entertained. Doing so, however, is ultimately not healthy for them as they need physical activity and social interaction.
There are many different types of crafts that you can teach your children such as knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, card making, candle making, woodworking, clay modeling, painting and many others. You can find lots of crafting ideas and projects at your local craft store as well as on the Internet.
Although crafting with you kids might seem like an expensive hobby, it will pay off in the long run. Not only will it teach them a useful skill that they can build on throughout their lives, but it will also help to keep them out of trouble. And if they become passionate about their craft, then perhaps they might be able to make a living with it one day.

Knitting and Crocheting
Knitting and crocheting are two different types of crafts, but they are similar in nature. Both methods allow you to make a fabric from yarn or thread by using either knitting needles or crochet hooks. These two crafts are generally popular among young girls, but it is slowly gaining more popularity among boys and men as well.
There are many patterns available in pattern books as well as online. The key is to start off with a beginner pattern; one that is fast and easy, and suitable for the child. Also, look for a pattern that the child will enjoy once it is finished. This will help to maintain the inspiration when he or she is tempted to give up.

Sewing
Sewing is another great craft that you can pass on to your children. You may want to get them started off with simple projects that they can sew by hand. Then once they understand the basic concept of sewing, you can introduce them to the sewing machine for bigger projects. Hair accessories, doll clothes and simple decorative items are excellent sewing projects for young children to sew by hand.
Card Making
Why not spend an afternoon with your kids and help them make cards for all their classmates. Handmade cards are rapidly becoming more popular, as the personal touch helps to make it more meaningful to the recipient. The tools and supplies needed, such as cardstock, cutters, stickers and other fun supplies, can be purchased at the local craft store at reasonable prices.
Scrapbooking
Do you have pictures of a memorable trip, family pictures, or pictures of your child’s classmates? If so, then why not compile them into a neat scrapbook and allow your child to add his or her unique touch to it as well. Children love pictures, and any craft around the pictures will be fun and exciting for them.
Painting
Children also enjoy painting. You can get an easel, a paint brush and a set of paint, and just allow them to paint anything they like. You can also purchase a paint-by-number project of their favorite animal, cartoon character or anything else they might enjoy painting. These painting projects will keep them occupied, as they usually take a while to complete.
Clay Modeling
There are many ways to have fun with clay models. Children can make their own clay toys, such as animals, cars and trucks and dolls, or jewelry items, such as earrings and necklaces, picture frames and many other neat little things. Again for project ideas you can purchase books, or go online for free craft projects.
Making candles is another great craft to enjoy with your children. They can help you to pick out the colors and scents, as well as help you to prepare the candle molds. Older children may be able to stir the wax for you, provided they take extra caution not to spill the wax as it can cause serious burns. Wearing long sleeves and gloves can help to protect them in case of a spill.
Woodworking
Woodworking crafts are another type of craft where extra precaution will have to be taken, especially if any saws, hammers and nails are involved. Nonetheless, they too can be very satisfying and educational for both boys and girls alike. There are lots of simple woodworking projects in books or online that are suitable for young children.
Not all crafts are suitable for all children as everyone has different likes. But no matter which craft they choose to do; the finished product will be treasured for many years to come. Not because they did a perfect job, but because they made it, and it will inspire them to continue to make more.

Great points! I believe in arts and crafts and this blog definitely introduces crafts well to parents to do with kids. Also, I suggest working with felt and things around the house. For example, musical instruments made out of whatever you can find at home. Maraccas made of raisin boxes, popsicle sticks and beans! Things like that that can introduce a child to music and other things. Great hub! Voted up and useful
Good suggestions and you've found lots of helpful links too!
These craft ideas are great not only for children but for anyone of any age. I recently taught my cousin who's 18 to knit, after she saw a scarf I had knitted for myself that she really liked.
I was really surprised that she didn't already know how to knit as it was something we learnt at school. Looks like schools don;t have the time for arts and crafts like they used to.
Yeah Rhelena, I doubt they will bring it back. Everything none essential seems to get cut as much as possible such as arts and crafts, music and sports etc. It's almost like if it's fun it's gone.
That was what made school fun for me. I knew if I could just get through my double maths class then I could play hockey or finish my craft project etc.
